2012 in Review (Con't)

Focus Area: Eliminating Waste

We aspire to reach our long-term vision of "zero waste to landfill" for both our manufacturing operations and office locations through a concerted effort to eliminate waste in all facets of the organization. To support this objective, Brady's operations use lean manufacturing strategies and other tools to target process improvement, source reduction, waste reduction and recycling.

In 2012, Brady's total waste (hazardous and non-hazardous) globally was 14.8M lbs, a 5% decrease from 2011. We sent less waste to Energy Recovery (and therefore more to landfill) as waste energy producers limited our shipments due to low natural gas prices.

Focus Area: Conserving Energy and Reducing GHG Emissions

For over a decade, Brady has been working to optimize its energy consumption and reduce associated greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In 2006, Brady was awarded the Governor's Award for Excellence in Energy Efficiency, on behalf of then Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle and the Focus on Energy Program. This program has helped Brady find grants totaling more than $85,000 for several energy-saving projects, including upgrading the chiller control system for air conditioning and upgrading boiler systems and incinerators at the Florist and Camden facilities in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Brady's target is to decrease emissions of CO2 by 2%, normalized by sales, by 2017. In 2012, Brady's total energy consumption was 117,930 MWh which represents a 2% decrease. Brady's sales, however, also decreased in 2012 resulting in flat energy intensity (energy use/sales).
