Management Approach (Con't)

Volunteering

Brady has two formal policies in place in the U.S. to promote employee volunteerism: a volunteer time-off policy which encourages employees to donate up to one full working day of paid time per year, and our Dollars for Doers program which encourages employees to donate personal time outside of work hours. Through Dollars for Doers, employees donate a minimum of 10 hours of time to a local organization and Brady then matches those hours with a charitable contribution at the rate of $12.50/ hour. While Brady employees around the globe are very engaged with their communities, our most active employee volunteer programs are currently found in the US, China, India and the Phillipines.

Through these programs, employees usually volunteer with organizations with which they are already familiar. In addition, Brady provides a number of volunteer opportunities connected to its Foundation partners. These include:

Good Hope Partnership with YMCA Camp Minikani

Customer Operations (i.e., Customer Service, Equipment Repair, and Technical Support) at Brady’s Headquarters in Milwaukee partnered with YMCA Camp Minikani.  The teams of more than 70 volunteers donated over 200 hours, valued at more than $4,500,  to build a game area and paint cabins.  The group also raised close to $13,000 in donations to help send disadvantaged children to summer camp.

Holiday Events
The Employee Volunteer Program successfully coordinated 14 Holiday Volunteer events and to spread holiday cheer at community and partner organizations.  A special focus this year was reaching out to foster and special needs children.  In addition to volunteering their time for these activities, Brady employees also donated 300 gifts to as part of the Holiday Giving Tree program at six different locations, and held an emergency drive for the family of a Brady Dreamer who had been the victims of a serious house fire, losing everything.

MSOE Servant Leadership Partnership
In 2012, Brady’s partnership with the Milwaukee School of Engineering’s Servant Leadership Program allowed students to successfully complete 23 community service projects.  The program is designed to give students real life experience in project management while encouraging them to direct their energies to helping the community.  In addition to providing the grant funding for the community service projects, Brady pairs each student team with a Brady employee who acts as a “coach,” guiding the team through the project and further reinforcing project management principles.

Annual Donations Drives
In 2012 Brady ran donation drives, collecting 41,000 pounds of food, school supplies, clothing and hygiene items.

Singapore Charity Drive for Sunbeam Place
In 2012, more than 40 members of the Brady Singapore team volunteered at Sunbeam Place, a home for approximately 80 abused and neglected children that provides a caring and safe environment along with academic support, life skills training, and emotional counseling.  The Brady team spent time tutoring, playing games, and talking with the children, and also raised SGD 6,000 for five new computers to be donated to Sunbeam Place through the Brady BBW and Charity Carnival in August at the Brady Singapore offices.

I Have A Dream (IHAD) Foundation Mentoring (Americas)

Twenty Brady employees make an annual commitment to volunteer an hour every week to tutor 5th graders from Clarke Street School in Milwaukee. Children are provided with transportation to Brady Corporation where they are paired up with the same tutor every week to work through homework assignments and build relationships. This program is in its third year and has had a big impact on both the students and the mentors.

Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) Servant Leadership (Americas)

Building on its Foundation partnership with MSOE, Brady paired 16 employees with project management expertise with MSOE class teams working to develop and operate community service programs. Participants learned project management processes and skills while also realizing the benefits of giving back to their communities.

Brady Community Garden (Americas)

Brady employee volunteers tended and cultivated two 20' X 20' gardens on site. The result was 1,000 pounds of fresh produce donated to Family House Shelter, an inner city charity which makes on-site meals for guest families and delivers fresh food to other needy families.

Annual Donation Drives (Americas)

Brady ran 5 donation drives in 2011 to collect food, school supplies, health and hygiene products and clothing for its Foundation partners. Over 10,000 pounds of these items were collected and donated to the community.

Brady Manila Angel Network (Asia Pacific)

Brady Angel Network is an association of 50 "Brady Angels" dedicated to serving and supporting their community. HOPE (Asia Pacific)

Brady India's corporate social responsibility initiative, HOPE, is active in their communities organizing blood drives and working with under-privileged children by raising funds for Shishu Mandir and other non-governmental organizations. Within the company, the group sponsors an annual "Go Green Day" where employees participate in a walk-a-thon and switch off personal electronic devices to represent their commitment to reducing their personal carbon footprints.

Each year we track the total number of hours volunteered by employees in the U.S. and seek to improve these numbers year-over-year. In 2011 we saw a significant increase in participation in our employee volunteer program over the previous year and we exceeded our 2011 target of 3000 total volunteer hours.
